    Registration-based tax settings

    Note

This guide is for merchants based in the United States, Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, or New Zealand. It's your responsibility to consult with local tax authorities or a tax professional to verify that you charge your customers the correct tax rates, and to ensure that you file and remit your taxes correctly.

Registration-based taxes are available for certain regions only. This guide applies to you if your store is based in one of the following regions:

Unlike location-based taxes, registration-based taxes require you to input a tax registration number to calculate your taxes. You can get this number from your local tax authority.

You can use Shopify to automate charging taxes, but you can't use Shopify to remit or file your taxes for you. After you review the regions where you sell your products and determine where you're responsible for charging taxes, then you can follow this guide to make sure that you've configured your Shopify store to charge the correct rates.
